Galina Kustova
Galina Kustova is a leading researcher of the Russian Institute of Scientific and Technical Information (VINITI) of the Russian Academy of Science (the Department of Linguistic Research). At the same time, she is a professor of the Chair of the Russian Language of Moscow Pedagogical State University, where she lectures on Modern Russian (syntax), modern problems of Russian linguistics and Introduction to philology. Her research interests include semantics, syntax, linguistic poetics, data bases, computer linguistics and corpus linguistics.
Galina Kustova graduated from the philological faculty of the Moscow State University. She majored in Russian and Slavic linguistics, and then became a postgraduate student at the department of general, comparative and applied linguistics of the same university. She got her PhD degree in 1989 (the dissertation “Semantic and syntactic analysis of reflexive predicates (with respect to the words denoting discrepance)”, and became a Doctor of Philology in 2002 (the dissertation “Types of derived meanings and mechanisms of semantic extension”).
Galina Kustova has been working in the projects “The lexical data base ‘Lexicograph-expert’ (supervised by E. Paducheva) and ‘The National Corpus of the Russian Language’ (Russian Academy of Science).
In her recently published book “Types of Derived Meanings and Mechanisms of Language Extension” (2004) she argues that mechanisms of semantic extension are the same for various parts of speech.
Elena Paducheva
Elena Paducheva is à Doctor of Science, à Foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, member of the European Linguistic society and member of the Grammatical Commission of the International Committee of Slavists. She graduated from the Moscow State University. Since 1957, she has been working in the All-Russian Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Her research activities includ mathematical methods in language description, machine translation, transformational syntax of Russian, logical analysis of language, semantics of grammatical tens and aspect, prosody, and communicative structure of the sentence. In 1974, she published the book "On the Semantics of Syntax" devoted to the problem of syntactic structure contribution to the meaning of the sentence. In 1985, her second book "The Utterance and its Relation with the Reality" was published: it is focused on the theory of reference and pragmatic aspects of the language.
Her book "Semantic Studies" (1996) is devoted to the spoken and narrative modes of discourse interpretation and the semantics of the narrative. Her recent bîîk "Dynamic Models in the Semantics of the Lexicon" (2004) reflects the author's experience in working with databases of Russian verbal semantics. She has taught and lectured at universities of Finland, Germany, Italy, Sweden, the USA, and Switzerland.
She gives regular courses of lectures on theoretical semantics and computer dictionaries at the Philological Faculty of the Moscow State Unversity and the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian State University for the Humanities. Under her supervision seven PhD dissertations have been defended. Most of her former postgraduate students have become doctors of science.
Raisa Rozina
Raisa Rozina is a leading researcher of the Vinogradov’s Institute of the Russian Language (Russian Academy of Science), as well as a professor of the Chair of Modern European Languages of the Russian State University for the Humanities, where she lectures on English lexicology and teaches English and translation. Her research interests include semantics, sociolinguistics, American and Russian slang, data bases, computer linguistics and corpus linguistics.
In 1971, Raisa Rozina graduated from the philological faculty of the Moscow State University, where she majored in English and Germanic linguistics, and then became a postgraduate student at the department of English Lexicology of the Moscow Pedagogical Institute of Foreign languages. She got her PhD in 1978 degree (the dissertation “Socially Marked Words in Modern English (with Respect to theXXth-Century American slang). In 2004, she got the degree of a Doctor of Philology (the dissertation “Semantic Extension in Standard Russian and Modern Russian Slang: the Verb”).
She has been working in the projects “The lexical Data base ‘Lexicograph-Expert’ (supervised by E. Paducheva) and ‘The norm, usage and speaking practice’ (supervised by L.P. Krysin, Russian Academy of Science). In 1999 she published the dictionary of Modern Russian slang “The Words We All Have Come Across” (in cooperation with O.P. Ermakova and E.A. Zemskaia). In her recent book based on her dissertation, Raisa Rozina combines the results of her research of slang semantic derivation and semantic extension of Russian verbs.
Raisa Rozina has conducted research in Poland and Germany and has taught in the USA, Canada, and the UK.
